There’s More Than One Dragonfly Helicopter

RC helicopters are a great hobby shared by children and adults alike. They come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. One of the most commonly sought models is known as a dragonfly. However, it is important to be specific when mentioning a dragonfly helicopter because there are at least three different versions from three different manufacturers. Their one common feature is that they all have a body design that closely resembles a dragonfly.

Depending on how complex a helicopter one desires and how much functionality one needs when operating it, Walkera makes several different models of dragonfly. The Walkera 22E RC Dragonfly is a 6 channel RC helicopter capable of full 3D flight.

The Walkera 5G6 Dragonfly is a 4 channel mini helicopter that is safe to fly indoors. This model features two main rotors stacked atop one another with a coaxial connection between them. The Walkera 68B Dragonfly is a 7 channel full function helicopter model for flying in the park or outside one's home.

The GWS Mini Dragonfly is a small 4 channel model that can be flown outdoors. It lacks some of the functionality of larger, more complicated models, but is probably better for introducing a child to the art of flying helicopters. The Syma 9093 is a mid sized dragonfly helicopter that a main rotor diameter of approximately 2 feet. It is a little over 6 inches in height and operates on 2 channels. Limited functionality in aeronautic movements may keep some more advanced flyers from being thrilled, but this is an excellent choice for a child who is just beginning to fly helicopters.

Off all the models mentioned here, the Syma 9093 is the one that most closely resembles a real dragonfly, with portals where the doors would be on a full sized helicopter that look like the eyes of an insect. There are other RC helicopter models that are identified as dragonfly helicopters that are not mentioned. These are similar to one or more of the models mentioned in functionality and size.

Shopping for parts for a dragonfly helicopter is made more difficult by the fact that there are so many different models using that identifier from different manufacturers. This is why it is critical to be specific when mentioning one and searching for parts on the internet or at a local hobby shop. The manufacturer and model number are two vital pieces of information needed to keep one from obtaining parts for another model that would do no good when trying to repair the one that is owned. When one is shopping for a dragonfly helicopter, it is important to have an idea of the size and functionality one is looking for. If it will be for a beginner that has little or no experience flying RC helicopters, one should focus on one of smaller, less expensive models with limited 2 channel controls. More experienced operators may insist on the challenge of a larger, more complex 6 or 7 channel version that is capable of many different tricks and stunts while in the air.
